adding on!
Every now and then, Kyle and I think about the long-term livability of our home and the ability to someday do an addition off the back of the house. We still have a few projects to tackle before we get to that point, but it’s been helpful for us to think through the feasibility of what an addition could look like and how that might impact our plans for the garage.
Last weekend, Kyle even staked out the potential footprint. We would definitely lose some of the backyard and deck, but it’s a part that we don’t really use much anyway. (And let’s be real, we’re never going to park a car in that garage.)
But this post isn’t really about adding on to our house…
Surprise!
That’s right, we’re expecting baby #2 this September! And yes, this is part of the reason I’d been quieter than usual on the blog and my reference to “busy with life” in this blog post. So far, this pregnancy has been very similar to my first with Avery – mostly some nausea (I’m still on my vomit-free streak though!), carb-loading and an aversion to coffee. This time around I’ve been a lot more tired though. So yeah, pair extreme fatigue with no coffee and I’m pretty much in bed by 9:00 most nights – which hasn’t left a lot of time for blogging.
But, I’m into the second trimester and feeling like a normal human again! We’re so excited to be adding to our family and you know we’ve already given a lot of thought to how we’ll shuffle things around to accommodate another little one (more on that to come – and no, probably not doing an addition to the house just yet).
This will be another impetus to tackle our unfinished projects though (oh hey, bedroom!) so get ready for some more DIY posts on this blog in the near future!
Congratulations! You had me fooled with the house addition talk. I’m glad you’re feeling better.
Congratulations, Lauren!
This is such good news, I’m really happy for you and your family.
Hope it all goes really smoothly and can’t wait to see the new posts!
Love from Portugal
Ahh! Congratulations! I’m excited to see all the new changes and future blog posts.
Congratulations! Coincidentally when you announced your pregnancy with Avery I commented that my wife and were expecting around the same time. Well deja-vu, we’re expecting our #2 in October.
Ha, we must be on the same schedule! Congrats to you guys!
Congrats!
Congratulations, this is exciting news!
Oh, congratulations! That is very exciting!
Very cool! Love your announcement, I was all excited about your potential house addition and then the baby announcement surprised me. So happy for your family!!
Congrats! Love the announcement. ๐
Congratulations! Looking forward to seeing how y’all adapt life, house, and blog to being a family of 4!
What an exciting new addition! Just for encouragement, we raised our two boys (19 and 21) in our 1,100 square foot, two-bedroom, one-bath house without any major trouble. We had always planned to add on “someday” and had several house plans all ready to go, but “someday” never came. Our youngest son finally has his own room now that his brother has moved out. They seem to be fairly well adjusted (as any kid can be these days). My husband also works from home, so small space living is definitely doable for the long haul. Our house is perfectly sized for our two-person near future. Best wishes on your new addition!
Thanks so much, that’s good to hear! I admit that part of me likes the idea of making it work in our existing footprint for the long haul but I know much of that will depend on if we continue to work from home (vs. getting an office space) and if we have a boy or another girl!
Brothers and sisters can share for quite awhile. We’re planning to separate our two when Jonathan starts kindergarten. That’s still more than a year away, and it will be tough for both of them I know. They’re inseperatable.
Yeah, I’m definitely fine with room sharing for awhile…it would just be more about the sleep schedules in the beginning. Also, with the two big sliding doors in Avery’s room it makes furniture layout for two a little tricky but I think we could figure something out if we go that route.
Congratulations, very exciting news!
Yay, such happy news! Congratulations! (And we must be due around the same time.)
Thanks Nicole, I had the same thought! September birthdays are the best (and apparently very popular). ๐
How wonderful! Congrats.
Congrats to the three… err four? of you!
Yay! Congratulations, you guys. ๐
Congratulations! I love the announcement. Avery looks so adorable!
Aww, CONGRATULATIONS!! And I wanted to say in your vacation post, how big is Avery?!! Nearly grown up, ๐ Glad you’re feeling better, that first trimester is, ugh.
Congratulations!!
Yeah!!!! Time to get my crotchet hooks out! : )
Awesome news! Congratulations!
Congratulations! How exciting! I have wondered if you’d be able to have a second kid in your house — but knowing you it’ll work perfectly!
Congrats! Number two is an exponential rise in effort required! Get sleep now! Best of luck.
Congratualtions!
Congratulations! I love reading the blog because I feel like it’s a realistic approach to home decoration, not some impossible, Pinterest-inspired dream home and makes me lust after a future where I will one day have my own house to play with.
Thank you Madelyne!
^^^ This so much!
Thank you, it’s always encouraging (and motivating!) to get such positive feedback from readers!

That is wonderful. Congratulations!
Congratulations! I’m excited to see how you’ll be fitting the new little one into your home.
I’m so excited for you! And I’m so happy you aren’t going to give up on this blog. I have loved reading your posts about Avery, as well as everything about home improvement/DIY too. Looking forward to more pregnancy and kid posts.
I’ve been reading for several years but have never commented until now… many congratulations! Looking forward to reading more about your newest adventure.
Thanks Emi! We really appreciate everyone’s support!
C*O*N*G*R*A*T*U*L*A*T*I*O*N*S! Great news! All the best.
Congratulations! Best wishes for a happy & healthy pregnancy!
Many many congratulations!
WOW! That’s so exciting!!!!
Congrats!!!
I don’t know how you are managing a life, a toddler and a pregnancy but my hat is off to you.
Thanks! Having a flexible schedule definitely helps a lotโฆand I’m not sure I’d say I have a very active social life. ๐
Hurray, so exciting! I would absolutely love to see you guys do an addition, but sharing a room has been working out pretty well for our two if you’re leaning that way. Congratulations!
Thanks Lilly, I’m definitely a fan of room sharing (I shared with my sister until my older brother went to college!) but with the big sliding doors we are limited on space. Oh, and then there’s the sleep thing. ๐ I think we’ll probably keep things flexible so we can adapt based on our needs and then maybe do the addition down the road. (We’re sorta waiting on finding out the gender to think about long-term room sharing.)
Congratulations on your upcoming addition! It’s the best kind, if you ask me, although they do require quite a bit of maintenance!!
