one more project!

January 23, 2012

In addition to the basement and loft, we’ll be taking on one more interior project this year:

Yup, we’re going to have a baby! The littlest Zerbey is due at the end of July and we can’t wait!

Hurray! Congrats, that is wonderful news.

And love the pride of Leos thing, too! My husband and I are 7/31 and 8/1, baby 1 is 8/20, and baby 2 is due 8/12. Our anniversary is that month too. I think eventually we’ll have to just have a carnival every August. It’s a terrific time of year to have a baby because you get a few months of decent weather for walking a non-napping newborn before it cools off/gets wet, and then they aren’t really mobile enough for the winter to matter.

      January 23, 2012 10:15 am

Thanks Kate (and congrats on baby #2)! We’re in a similar boat. Kyle’s b-day is 8/2, mine is 9/19 and our anniversary is 9/25! I *am* excited about the timing – Aug.-Sept. are usually the best months here and since it never gets that hot (knock on wood) I won’t have to be miserable in June/July!

    delurking to say CONGRATS!

We’re in the middle of a large renovation with two little boys, age 4 and 2, and while there are times I question the sanity of our decision, more often than not we have a ball working on it all together. My eldest can now hammer nails and drive in fasteners with the electric screwdriver almost as well as I can.

I hope you are not feeling sickly!

Thanks Amber! We still have plenty of projects down the road and look forward to passing on the hammer. =) (Actually, I already texted Kyle a photo of the kid’s workbench on a trip to IKEA a while back.)

I’m feeling pretty good! I don’t want to jinx it, but I seem to have evaded the whole morning sickness thing.

Congratulations! I’ve been following your blog from Philadelphia for a while now, and look forward to seeing how you transform your flex room. I’m an architect as well, and my wife and I are expecting our first child (due) July 20th. We have a 1940′s Cape Cod just outside the city and have been doing renovations since we moved in 2 years ago. Having a non-architect wife makes it harder to make decisions sometimes, and I show her your projects to help plead my case from time to time. Look forward to updates as you create your nursery.

Thanks Paul and congrats! Our due dates are so close (we’re on the 28th). Kyle and I have already butted heads a few times on ideas for the nursery, but furniture is the one area where we sometimes butt heads. =) Now we just have to do the basement project so we can empty out the flex room!

super excited for you two! my younger daughter is july 26th and i had her during that heat wave we had the summer of 09 (i’m in olympia). nothing like a newborn *insisting* she be burrito’d up in a blankie when it’s 100 degrees outside. :-)

in other news: on your recommendation i went with warmly yours for radiant heat in my basement bath and it’s super fab! i’m planning on using them again for my main bath, and my contractor now has a new source (he hadn’t heard of them and couldn’t believe the great prices).

you never can tell with cats. our older cat is pretty fussy and not very sociable, and we thought she’d be a problem with the baby, but she lets the little one (now 2.5) totally maul her and lay on her and pull on her. it’s amazing really. i’ve seen animals that didn’t tolerate visiting kids totally take to a new baby in their own family.

Congrats! We just had our first baby last week! I’ll tell you though, it was quite the adventure finding well designed items for the nursery on a decent budget – no ouef cribs for this family. We pulled it off though – everyone seems to like it and most seem to think it ‘should be in a magazine’.. heh. More so, it is hard to find things that you will use, but can be folded up to be stored away so you can maintain a somewhat uncluttered existence.

Congrats and hope all goes well! Enjoy the pregnancy, get your sleep while you can, it all changes sooner than you’d like.

A huge congrats. Just wanted to add that these little “marshmallows” who arrive and capture our hearts and turn our worlds upside-down have a way of making things matter not so much anymore. That is to say that you will be so in love, tired, worried, exhausted, captivated, and proud that a few toys on the floor will seem no big deal. Having watched the care you have taken with your house, I can only imagine how wonderful you’ll be with your own little creation!

  67. January 26, 2012 4:49 am

Congratulations!! We just had our first and we’re adjusting in our small house, baby stuff is cluttering but some of it is invaluable for your sanity! I suggest a bouncy seat, swing and rock n play (for your bedroom – small, not too low, great if baby has reflux and inexpensive)

Make sure you check the Monte out in person. I agonized about gliders vs armchairs and I was obsessed w the Monte, but once I tried it out I realized its very narrow–good for nursing if that kind of set-up ends up being comfortable but not for snuggling. We ended up w a wide comfy armchair (the Karlsbad in white Grann leather from ikea) plus an ottoman. I nursed on the couch w a nursing stool for my feet, and that chair is so awesome for reading together and snuggling before bed. The child (17 months) sits in it by himself to read, too!

    • January 26, 2012 1:50 pm

excellent point, it’s funny because I’m the one who likes the monte and lauren not so much, of course I just want a snuggle chair;)

  70. February 8, 2012 8:35 am

Congrats on the future little addition! Sorry I’m so late in commenting but I’ve been on leave with my own newborn the past few weeks and out of touch with reality (aka-blogs). I’m not surprised one bit at the news because my wife and I did the EXACT same thing you guys are doing- we live in a small city rowhouse and we renovated our basement to be a den/guestroom right before telling everyone that we were expecting, hence turning our guest bedroom into the nursery! Us architects must think alike, love our small spaces and looking to maximize it where we can- typically basements and attics! :-) All the best to you guys on your new adventure, and yes, it is quite the adventure readjusting life to a newborn (all in a good way, of course!).

Thanks AC and congrats on your newest addition! It’s funny b/c when we started the big remodel project almost two years ago we had the idea in the back of our heads that the “flex” room would be a nursery at some point and I remember quickly researching nurseries (having only a vague idea of what you actually needed) to make sure the layout would work.
