when sketchup imitates life

We started modeling our house in SketchUp a few years ago. Since then, it has helped us figure out the overall redesign for the main floor, choose the color scheme for the exterior, and flush out specific details like our fence and loft ladder. While we’ve been pretty precise about dimensions, colors and materials, I never really thought the final product would look like the “sketchy” model, especially considering that our house is 100 years old.

But I have to say, I’m a little weirded out/amazed at the comparison.

Obviously we’re still missing the barn doors (doors…totally overrated!) and we changed a few small things along the way, but all in all, SketchUp doesn’t lie.

The last time we did a SketchUp comparison, it was way back in April (see that post here). This photo was taken at the end of demo day, when chezerbey felt more like a barn than a house. Ugh, I get tired just looking at this!

Needless to say, it’s been a busy year!

  1. Sketchup is such a great tool – so helpful when planning things out. I am in love with your big glass exterior doors. I’ve been promising for years to replace ours with something similar, but can’t find an affordable version I love.

Can’t wait to see the barn doors!

I know, and I love that there’s a free version out there too! (By the way, love the outdoor bar idea. I wish we lived in a climate where we could justify that type of setup.)

Our glass doors are stock sizes from Simpson. I don’t remember exactly how much they cost, but they are on the more affordable side when it comes to doors. (Craigslist can be a good source too…seems like there are lots of “oops we ordered the wrong thing” scenarios.)

All you need is a ghostly figure in the middle of the room!

I, too, was going to ask about the ghostly figure in the middle of the room! Is that who the flex room is for, your house’s ghosts? : )

Ha! No supernatural forces that we know of here…although a full size “sketchup dude” might be an interesting decor idea. =)

  4. Wow! That is so cool – like something on HGTV 🙂 I also have to tell you that those floors look amazing. How are you finding the dark color? My mom had dark floors once and she thought dust and crumbs were very obvious and so she refuses to have them ever again.

Thanks Melissa! So far we really like the dark color and it seems to hide dust and crumbs well (it’s also a matte finish which I think helps).
